Your house decides which lift you need

North London is built in layers, and each layer has a staircase of its own. Knowing which one you are standing in tells you most of what you need to know before anybody visits.

Victorian & Edwardian terraces

Narrow, steep flights, often with winder treads turning at the top. Nearly always need a curved rail — and nearly always take one, despite how tight they look.

Interwar semis

The 1930s suburbs tend to give you a straighter run with a quarter turn at the bottom or top. Frequently a straight lift, sometimes a short curve.

Conversions & maisonettes

An internal flight inside your own flat is a normal job. A shared staircase is not yours alone, so the freeholder has to agree first.

Newer builds

Usually a single straight flight with generous width — the quickest and least expensive staircase to fit a lift to, often in and working the same day.

The tight-stairs question

“Our stairs are far too narrow for one”

We hear this most weeks, usually in a period terrace, and it is almost always wrong. Stairlifts can be fitted to narrow, steep, straight or curved staircases, and a made-to-measure rail gives far more room to work with than people expect.

The number that decides it is the clear width at the tightest point of the flight, not the width where you are standing. That is the first thing we measure, and it takes about a minute.

The seat and footrest fold back against the wall when the lift is parked, so the stairs stay usable for everyone else in the house — which is the other thing people worry about in a narrow Victorian hallway.

What we supply

Four options, quoted honestly

We are independent rather than a manufacturer, so there is no target here and no lift we are pushed to sell.

  • Straight — one unbroken flight. Rail cut to length, usually fitted in a few hours.
  • Curved — any turn or half-landing. Rail manufactured to match your stairs exactly.
  • Reconditioned — a refurbished lift for less, where the staircase is straight and budget decides it.
  • Outdoor — weatherproofed for front steps, side returns and garden flights.

Most of what we fit is Acorn — the 130 straight lift takes 127kg with a heavy-duty version rated to 159kg, and the 180 curved lift takes 120kg with an inertia seatbelt and a FastTrack rail. Both carry a 12-month manufacturer guarantee. We also cover Bruno, Handicare, Stannah and Brooks.

Why local helps

We are in N21, not a call centre

Being round the corner is worth more on a stairlift than on most purchases, because the relationship does not end at the installation.

A survey booked quickly

Not whenever a van is next coming your way. Enfield, Barnet and Haringey are effectively on the doorstep from Winchmore Hill.

The fitters come back

We repair stairlifts across London, including lifts we did not supply. You are not buying from one firm and chasing another when it stops.

Free, no-obligation quotes

In writing, covering the lift, the fitting and taking an old one away. No expiry date, no discount that vanishes tonight, no follow-up pressure.

Questions

Stairlifts in North London: your questions answered

Will a stairlift fit the stairs in a Victorian terrace?
Nearly always, and it is the question we are asked most in North London. Period terraces have narrow, steep flights, often with winder treads turning at the top, and people assume that rules a lift out. It does not. Stairlifts can be fitted to narrow, steep, straight or curved staircases — the figure that decides it is the width at the tightest point of the turn, not the width at the bottom.
My stairs turn. Does that make it much more expensive?
It makes it a curved stairlift, which costs more than a straight one and takes longer to arrive. The reason is the rail: a straight rail is cut to length from stock, while a curved rail is manufactured to match the exact rise, going and radius of your staircase. That is a production run of one, and it is where both the extra cost and the wait come from.
Which parts of North London do you cover?
All of it. We are based at 4 Hoodcote Gardens in Winchmore Hill, N21, so Enfield, Barnet, Haringey, Islington, Camden and Waltham Forest are local to us rather than a trip across the city. We cover all throughout London beyond that too.
How much does a stairlift cost?
It depends on whether your staircase is straight or curved, how long the rail needs to be, and whether you want new or reconditioned. Anyone quoting a figure before seeing your stairs is guessing. The survey is free, takes about half an hour, and you get a price in writing with no obligation at the end of it. Ring 0800 4647401.
Can a stairlift go in a flat or a conversion?
Inside your own flat, yes, where there is an internal staircase — maisonettes and loft conversions are common jobs. A shared staircase in a converted house is different, because the stairs are usually communal and you would need the freeholder’s permission. Worth asking before you go far down the road.
Does a stairlift damage the staircase?
No. The rail bolts to the treads of the stairs themselves rather than to the wall, so there is no structural work and no replastering. It can be taken out later and the tread holes filled, which matters in a period house you may want to sell on.
What happens in a power cut?
The lift keeps working. Stairlifts run on electricity with a rechargeable battery system, and the batteries charge whenever the lift is parked at either end of the rail. We show you where to leave it parked so it is always charged.
